Mt Zion welcomes new pastor Jan 8

The Rev. Tyler D. Rasmussen has accepted Mt Zion’s call to be our new pastor! He will be starting his ministry with us on January 8, 2020. Be sure to come to his first services on Sunday, January 12 at 8:30 and 10:45.

A sixth generation Iowan of German, English, and Scandinavian descent, Pastor Tyler is coming to us from Trinity Lutheran Church, Bucks, PA, a rural church over 250 years old. Prior to that, he served his internship at Christ Lutheran Church in Dallas. He has a bachelor of arts in music performance on the organ from Iowa State University, and received his Master of Divinity from the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago.

“I remember being involved in church as a youth, but feeling being a Christian did not seem to make any difference in most people. Lives were not changed because of faith. Even in ministry, I’ve been told that being a Christian is easy because there aren’t many rules. But Jesus demanded so much of us: honest and complete repentance, unending forgiveness, picking up  your cross, loving in a way that is so much more than any regular person ever imagined,” Pastor Tyler said.

He continued, “Lutherans rightly emphasize, ‘We are saved by grace through faith and not by works’ (Eph 2:8-9), but we must continue by saying, ‘But good works are the way of life of those in Christ Jesus.’ (Eph 2:10). That’s my hope for ministry: both discovering the joy and freedom of the faith that saves us and also finding out that when this saving faith truly enters our hearts and souls, it will challenge and change us daily to be more like God.”

Passions in ministry

Some of his passions in ministry include faith formation: “If faith makes a real difference, then how we do faith formation is central to everything. How do we plant and nurture faith in each other?” He also recognizes that repentance, forgiveness and reconciliation are “so much more than ‘I’m sorry,’ ‘It’s okay,’ and a hug. This is at the heart of the gospel and we should know how to do it.”

If faith makes a real difference, then how we do faith formation is central to everything.
