In October of 2005, Mt. Zion entered a new chapter in its facility history. The congregation, wanting to make the campus accessible, safer and modernized, entered a building project of daunting proportion. Adding ramps, elevators, a new space to gather, a nursery, and a long overdue administrative wing, they gave sacrificially that all might be welcomed and able to enter here. But, more than “adding space” a careful theological perspective was added to the artistic and architectural. Entering the north entrance you will notice a canopy that calls to mind Wisconsin’s deep ties to Frank Lloyd Wright and The Prairie School of architecture. Upon entering the gathering space, one can’t help but look upward at the clerestory windows and dynamic high ceilings. Both the height and light are there to remind us that we are humbled to enter the house of the Lord, that it is indeed a privilege to be here, not in our church but in God’s house. To the right is a wood burning fire place. On cold winter mornings the worshiper smells the home fires burning out in the parking lot and enters to a warm fire and hot coffee. This serves to remind us that in the house of the Lord there are many rooms, and a place is prepared for us. In other words, in God’s house, there is a home for everyone. The warm bright narthex and cathedral room, the cathedral insets and the several hundred square feet of glass are reminders that the light of Christ is everywhere. The carpet pattern is a reminder of new life with its leaf-like pattern. The carpet has several insets that are representative of a flowing stream, life’s waters, the water of baptism. There are many more small details not described here but they all serve to say, ‘In my Father’s house, there are many mansions, I go there to prepare a place for you.” And above all, natural light everywhere, just as the light of Christ penetrates all darkness and every place. |
