Leadership

Our Leadership Model
We believe in the power of God to make and equip leaders for ministry. We regard the office of Word and Sacrament (the pastor’s office) as holy and honorable, but also affirm and underscore the need for effective lay leaders (people who aren’t pastors) to respond fully to God’s call for the body of Christ.

We have many different types of leaders at Mt. Zion. Some organize and run a specific facet of ministry that speaks to their gifts and talents, like knitting prayer shawls, writing to college students, or facilitating our Children’s Ministry. Some take leadership roles in worship by reading Scripture or being a communion deacon (giving out the body and blood of Christ during Holy Communion). Some serve on our Leadership Board. Some participate in year-round ministries, some plug in for a brief time every year for the same event, and some make short-term commitments that allow them to enter different parts of ministry at different times.

Our new ministry model encourages many to participate in the leadership of ministry in our church, whether by leading a focused ministry on their own, leading a team of people, or coordinating a larger set of ministries.  These people do not serve on Leadership Board, or “do all the work” in their ministry area, but organize and communicate with those who do. We seek to encourage people to answer God’s call to leadership in ways that encourage discipleship and creativity rather than fitting into an existing structure of committees, etc.

With so many opportunities present for leaders, and with a structure flexible enough to include many styles and gifts, we are constantly seeking new, creative, and visionary leadership for Mt. Zion. For more information, please contact the pastors or a member of the Leadership Board.

Leadership Board
Mt. Zion is led by a team of faithful disciples who serve together on the Leadership Board. Our Leadership Board is like the traditional Church Council in some ways, but is different in some very important ways. Like the traditional Church Council, the Leadership Board is a team of people with the responsibility of oversight for the ministry of Mt. Zion. They are an important connection for the pastors and staff, a resource for gathering and communicating information, and people dedicated to the mission of Mt. Zion.

Unlike a traditional Church Council, however, a critical emphasis of the Leadership Board is visioning and shaping the future of the ministry at Mt. Zion. Rather than simply an issue-oriented group (i.e. what are we going to do about “x?”), the Leadership Board asks questions like: Who are we? What is God calling us to do and be? Who is our neighbor? Who will we be in 10 years? How can we expand our current ministries, and encourage new ones?
