Worship Information

At Mt. Zion, worship is the center of our life together. Through God’s Word and Sacraments, we are strengthened, connected, reminded, fed, and equipped to do God’s work in the world.

As Lutheran Christians, we value our worship heritage, so each service is structured by an ancient rhythm that has marked Christian worship for centuries. This rhythm is often called “liturgy,” which is not to be confused with a certain style of music or a specific book. The word liturgy means “the work of the people,” so liturgy refers to the movements that we make in each worship service in remembrance of and in response to what God has done for us. This liturgical rhythm means that during worship,

  • we confess our sins and receive forgiveness,
  • we sing God’s praise,
  • we read God’s Word and hear that Word preached,
  • we confess our faith,
  • we pray for the world,
  • we offer our gifts to the ministry of the church,
  • we receive the gift of Christ’s body and blood in Holy Communion, and
  • we are sent into the world.

Our Lutheran heritage also invites us to embrace different ways of expressing our faith, and calls us continually to reform, to explore the new, and to listen for the different ways that the Holy Spirit speaks to us. Therefore, each of our worship services has a distinct flavor that reflects the different ways that God speaks to our community.

Sunday 8:30 — We gather in the main sanctuary. This worship service is accompanied by organ and piano, led by Voices of Zion choir and accented often by Festival Bells. Our children's and youth groups frequently offer their musical gifts. On festival days, our 8:30 worship services often include brass, winds, or percussion.

Sunday 11:00 am Our later service on Sunday mornings is now held in the Sanctuary.  Previously it had been held in the Chapel, but in response to continued growth, we now gather on the South side (facing North Avenue) of the Sanctuary. The service is upbeat and informal. We sing many different styles of contemporary music, led by Acacia, our praise band comprised of dedicated and talented Mt. Zion folks. The nursery is close by, and there are rocking chairs in the South Narthex as well.

No matter which service you attend, you will usually hear the same sermon that is preached at the other services, and you will have an opportunity to receive Holy Communion as we celebrate the Lord’s Supper at all worship services. Children are always welcome in worship at Mt. Zion;  and for families who prefer it, the Nursery is available.

At Mt. Zion, our members come from a wide variety of traditions. While some of our members grew up as Lutherans, many were raised in other traditions, from Catholic to Pentecostal, and everything in between. Families who have different backgrounds in the same household often find Mt. Zion to be a welcoming place as Lutheran worship contains elements familiar to many different groups combined with a reforming spirit of openness and joy. We are a Reconciling in Christ congregation.

We look forward to welcoming you to worship soon!
