Mount Zion’s Festival Hymn Sing will be held on Sunday, November 12 at both services. Led by the Voices of Zion, the hymn festival is another way to celebrate the anniversary year of the Reformation. Inspired by Martin Luther’s belief that music is a living voice of the Gospel, the hymn sing will focus on the hymns and songs of our faith throughout the more than 500 year journey.
Hymns have a special place in Lutheran worship. Luther states that there are three means of acquiring grace: the Gospel, the sacraments, and music. Hymns combine the word with song and are powerful expressions of our faith. They remind us of who God is; they weave our lives together; they connect us with the church of the past and the witnesses who have gone before us; they point us to the church of the future.
Each hymn chosen for the hymn sing reflects important beliefs of the age. Each hymn will begin with a reflection – some composed by our church members – each read by one of our church members. All of this weaves our lives together in a celebration of faith, music and connection.
